And can it be...
There is an old hymn that I often return to in my prayers which is titled "And Can it Be" by Charles Wesley (music by Thomas Campbell) from the early 1700's.
Here are some of the familiar words from this hymn:
And can it be that I should gain an interest in the Savior's blood?
Died he for me who caused his pain?
For me, who him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be that thou my God, shouldst die for me?
Amazing love! how can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me!
How can it be indeed. Today let us all just reflect on Messiah Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith who, for the joy set before him, endured the cross for us!
Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!
