An advent prayer


First week of Advent 2025 is upon us.  This is the formal liturgical term for this time of year marking the arrival of Messiah Jesus into human history in the first century.

How is this season celebrated?  Well, other than the usual Christmas traditions, from a faith perspective, we embrace the four pillars of hope, peace, joy, and love.

How would you rate these 4 in your life right now?  How is your hope?  Do you have peace in your life?  How about your joy?  Are you enJOYing life?  And, last but not least, how is your love?  Are you growing in your love for the Lord and for the humans around you? 

"Dear Lord, increase our faith, enlarge our hearts, and move us into a people filled with all kinds of hope and peace, and joy and love!"

Amen indeed!

Of Feasts and Eastertides...

(wikipedia photo of a sculpture of St George by Donatello) It's Monday today, and, on the Christian liturgical calendar, it's the feast of St. George in the second week of Eastertide. I realized that I don't actually know who this George person was nor do I know what Eastertide means, so, I did some homework to find out. You are so welcome... St. George is, according to Britannica, the patron saint of England. Apparently, this George was a Christian Roman soldier in the third century who was killed by the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian. Sad story really... Now to Eastertide which is simply the time from Easter Sunday through to the celebration of Pentecost - a span of 50 days. Its the extended celebration of Jesus' resurrection from the dead. Prevalence in Prayer

I read a quote today about prayer that I found both encouraging and challenging from the archives of the great C.H. Spurgeon: "Oh, that Christian men would remember this! Perseverance in prayer is necessary to prevalence in prayer!   Those great intercessors, who are not so often mentioned as they ought to be in connection with confessors and martyrs, were nevertheless the grandest benefactors of the Church; but it was only by abiding at the mercy-seat that they attained to be such channels of mercy to men.
