Here's to 2025!


So we step into a new year soon and I wonder, am I ready for 2025? I guess in 2025 we'll get a new Mission Impossible movie along with a new Karate Kid and a new Superman movie. 


What else is coming? More digital-based living? Driverless taxis in big cities? More flexible workplace arrangements for people?

Apparently, one thing is ending - Microsoft's support of Windows 10...hmmm.

Here are a few questions I'm thinking about today:
  1. What do I want to be different this year?
  2. What do I start doing, stop doing, or do better?
  3. How can I grow and mature more spiritually?
  4. Is there anything BIG I'd love to see God do in my life in 2025?
  5. What BOLD things can I pray and believe Jesus for?

Maybe you could choose a word for your new year like one of these:
  • Resilient
  • Stronger
  • Present
  • Reflective
  • Kind

I'm not sure what this year will bring but I'm always an optimist about hope, so, I leave you with this from Romans 12:11-13:
Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

Now that's some good advice for this new year, right?

Going along with the crowd?

Over the last several years I've found some helpful writings from the early church writings of the first few centuries of Christianity. Here is a quote I found interesting today (from www.commonprayer.net): Cyprian of Carthage, a third-century North African bishop, wrote, “The world is going mad in mutual extermination, and murder, considered as a crime when committed individually, becomes a virtue when it is committed by large numbers. It is the multiplication of the frenzy that assures impunity to the assassins.” It made me think of the old idea of peer pressure and going with the flow of culture rather than standing out and even swimming against the downstream flow of secular modernity.  Maybe Cyprian was correct in seeing how evil can become standard if enough people in a society or culture accept it? Signs...

There is a sign in our kitchen at home that says "Gather" right above our oven cabinets. Since we love to eat with friends and family often, it is a fitting reminder of some of the things that bring us life. Do you have a sign somewhere at home? Maybe your sign is a decal on your car or a poster on the wall. I'm sure if you have one, it has special significance to you. Signs can guide us and provide meaning and direction. Signs can warn us of danger and lead us home. In Matthew 16 (echoing chapter 12), Jesus is asked by the Jewish religious leaders for a sign. He declines to do so likely because He knew no sign would convince them He was the Messiah. He tells them to ponder the sign of Jonah and then walks away. Many of those religious leaders had already seen and or heard of His powerful miracles yet they still missed the reality that those signs revealed the Kingdom of God.
