The healing power of music...
And whenever the tormenting spirit from God troubled Saul, David would play the harp. Then Saul would feel better, and the tormenting spirit would go away.
-1 Samuel 15:23
As a musician, this verse has always struck a chord (literally!) with me. Why? This is a glimpse of the God-given power that music can have in our lives during times of trouble and celebration.
Have you ever experienced this? I think we know this intuitively - this mysterious power of music. Think of movie soundtracks, stadium sports songs, and that high school anthem music we used to dance to!
In fact, there are several studies out there praising the therapeutic value of both listening and playing music.
I learned to play guitar largely by learning and playing songs of worship, so, music and my walk with the Lord are closely connected.
Music can also bring healing and comfort when we're in a bad place and desperately need the melody, rhythms, and solace of instruments and songs of lament.
That's why we embrace music in our worship gatherings...speaking to our hearts and our souls and letting the truth of Scripture musically shape our moments.
Maybe today you might play that favorite song or album and lift a prayer of gratefulness for the healing of the Lord through music with me!
Pastor Ben
Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
